AVG File Server Edition
The AVG File Server Edition is a tightly controlled server end security solution that installs on a single Windows Server and scans all file system activity for viruses, malware and rootkits. The local server file system, any mapped network drives, and any Terminal Services connections are efficiently scanned for threats by AVG on a real-time basis. This Edition is not intended for Email Servers running MS Exchange, and only protects the server itself, or server-specific operations. The AVG File Server Edition is licenced based on maximum concurrent client connections to the server. Comparative information on all of the AVG Network Editions can be found at the following site: Comparative information on all of the AVG Network products can be found here
TOPStep 1 - Downloading AVG Software
Visit the following URL:
www.avg.com/ww-en/download?prd=afs
Download the following files to the server:
- AVG for Windows (avg_ipw_stf_all_85 ...)
- AVG Admin for Windows (avg_rad_stf_all_85 ...) ** AVG reporting facilities, if required**
- AVG for Sharepoint (avg_spt_stf_all_85...) **Only if the server is a SharePoint Portal Server**
We advise that you save the above files to a readily accessible location, ie. the desktop.
Step 2 - Installing AVG onto the Server
There are two ways in which you can install AVG onto the server. They are:
- Directly (recommended)
- Simpler installation procedure
- Uses less system resources
- Using AVG Admin
- Enables AVG reporting facilities (requires the use of an SMTP email server)
As illustrated above, the only reason to install the AVG File Server Edition using AVG Admin is to take advantage of AVG’s email reporting facilities. AVG Admin can be used to send the network or server administrator an email upon the trigger of any of the following conditions:
- AVG is out of date
- Server requires restart
- Server is infected
- New update available
Several other notifications also exist. If you would like AVG to email notification of events such as these to an email address, then you should install using Option 2. Otherwise, option 1 is sufficient.
Option 1 - Direct Installation
This will install the AVG File Server Edition directly onto your server. To begin the process, launch the AVG for Windows file that you downloaded earlier. AVG Setup will extract, and the installation wizard should be launched. After accepting the licence agreement, AVG will then check the system for conflicting applications and previous versions of AVG. To ensure worry-free installation of AVG, you should ensure the following is true for the server on which you are installing:
- Server has at least 100MB RAM free at any given time (servers with less available RAM may experience slowdown, or problems applying the AVG Anti-Virus Database to server activity from local memory), and meets other system requirements.
- Server does not have any other resident Anti-Virus products installed (ie. Symantec, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky etc). These will interfere with the AVG Resident Shield and may cause erratic and undesirable system behaviour, or even crash.
- Server does not have any broken/corrupted previous AVG installations. The remote installation will automatically remove any remnants of AVG 7.5, but if there are bits and pieces left over from AVG 8.x, then installation can fail. If you suspect this is the case, the AVG Removal Tool is available from www.avg.com/ww-en/download-tools.
If no conflicting application is found, you will be presented with the following:

Whether you choose Standard or Custom installation will depend mainly on whether the server is running Terminal Services. The two options differ as follows:
Standard Installation
- Installs only core AVG components and services to optimise AVG scanning efficiency
- Installs user related scans and update schedules

Once Finish is hit, AVG will install. Server restart is not required.
Custom Installation
- Can install the Webshield, Linkscanner, and Email Scanner components. **We do not recommend installation of these components without a specific reason** These are workstation services and should only be used if the Server is being used only for workstation activities. We recommend that you tick only 'AVG for Windows' in the Component Selection screen
- Can further optimise AVG for Terminal Servers
- Further minimise memory load
- Remove user-specific tasks, schedules, and notifications
If you are running terminal services, we recommend removing the tick from the box, as illustrated:

Click Next, then Finish. AVG will now be optimised for use on a Terminal Server. Server restart is not required.
Option 2 - Installing using AVG Admin
To install the AVG Email Server Edition using AVG Admin, launch the file "avg_rad_stf_all_85 ...)" that you downloaded earlier. You will receive the following welcome screen:

Proceed to the installation selection screen. Select Custom Installation, and proceed to the following screen:

Leave only the above three options ticked, as shown. All other options are not relevant to the Email Server Edition. Once installation is finalised, the core AVG Admin components will have been installed, and the AVG Admin Server deployment wizard will be launched:
Click Next - you'll then be asked which roles you want AVG Admin to play:
DataCenter
- Stores all your AVG Admin settings, and applies these settings to the AVG software that you will be installing onto the server.
UpdateProxy Role
- Allows you to mirror the AVG updates on the server.
As you are only installing AVG onto the server, you need only select DataCenter role in the above window. You will then be asked which Database you would like to use. You should leave the setting on Firebird (unless you have a pre-existing MS SQL server that you would like to use). You can then proceed with all default settings and then click Deploy. AVG Admin is now installed! You can now proceed to install the AVG scanning software onto the server.
Installing AVG - AVG Network Installer Wizard
To launch the AVG Network Installer Wizard, click Start -> All Programs -> AVG 8.5 Remote Adminstration -> AVG Network Installer Wizard. Click Next - this will display the following:

To see all installation parameters, click Advanced Mode, and then Next. This will display a number of steps:
- Step 1/10 - Displays information on the network ports that need to be opened for flawless operation of the Network Installer Wizard.
- Step 2/10 - Allows you to set the Licence number, and asks for the AVG for Windows installation file location. You should specify the location to which the AVG for Windows installation file was downloaded earlier
- Step 3/10 - Allows you to specify which components will be installed and which components not installed. As you are installing to a server, we strongly recommend you click "Select installation components", and only marking "AVG for Windows".
- Step 4/10 - Allows you to set the behaviour of the target station during AVG installation. Default values are fine.
- Step 5/10 - This step automatically connects the AVG installation to the Database. Keep the top option ticked, and leave the bottom option unticked.
- Step 6/10 - Allows advanced settings of the AVG Agent service, which facilitates remote installation. We do not recommend changing these settings unless there are errors during installation that we need to diagnose.
- Step 7/10 - Allows you to scan the network for stations to install on. We advise you 'select a single station'. When prompted, enter the computer name localhost, and then proceed.
- Step 8/10 - Shows the result of the scan. You can now select the server as it is shown, and click Install.
- Step 9/10 - Shows the installation process. Please be patient during this process. The installer needs to install the AVG agent, copy the installation file, and run a remote procedure call to trigger installation. This process can take up to 15 minutes. Do not worry if after installation you see the notification "cannot detect" or "not present" - this means that the installation is finished and the AVG Agent has been removed
- Step 10/10 - Gives the installation summary. Click Finish to complete the process.
You will now be able to open the AVG Admin Console (Start -> All Programs -> AVG Remote Adminstration 8.5 -> AVG Admin Console). The server will be underneath the Email Servers branch on the left. You can now change and mandate its settings from this point. On the left, you can click "notifications" to see which conditions you can set to trigger an email report, as seen below:

Configuring AVG Admin Reporting facilities
For email notifications to be correctly sent, you will need to specify a live email server. Open the AVG Admin Console, click Tools -> AVG Admin Server Settings, as illustrated below:

Once this is correctly set, an email with the above details will be sent upon trigger of the event that you specified in Notifications.
Step 3 – Installing the AVG Sharepoint Portal Plugin
The AVG Internet Security SBS Edition includes a plugin to your Microsoft SharePoint Portal to provide comprehensive scanning of all your shared Microsoft documents. If you do not run a Sharepoint Portal Server, please disregard this step. The installation of this plugin is very simple. To make use of this plugin, launch the installation file you downloaded in Step 1 on the machine containing the SharePoint Portal. You should see the following:

All default values in the installation procedure are fine – there is very little tweaking necessary for the AVG plugin to SharePoint. Once the installation has completed, all shared documents will be scanned whenever opened or closed by any user. Please note that the SharePoint plugin will not be centrally administered by the AVG Admin Console.
Step 4 - Familiarising yourself with AVG
We hope that you have been able to install AVG successfully, and that you experience the error-free operation, low system resource-load and award winning Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware security that AVG is known for.
AVG should now be fully installed and optimised for your server’s needs – if you choose to purchase a licence, all you will need to do is activate the AVG software with the new licence – no further downloads or configuration changes are necessary.
