Frequently Asked Questions (Business)
AVG Remote Administration allows the network administrator to remotely install, update, and configure AVG across the computer network. Before installing AVG Remote Administration, it is necessary to meet the following conditions:
- Have a Business edition licence number. If you do not own such a product please refer to the Business Securitysection and choose a suitable solution for your network.
- Have a Supported operating system. A list of supported operating systems can be found here.
- The Remote Administration component must be installed on all client stations. To verify its presence, Open the AVG program (Click on Start > All Programs > AVG > AVG User Interface) and click on the Components menu. If it is not present, you can install it by running the AVG installation and selecting the Add/remove components option. More information on how to Add/Remove components can be found in FAQ 4417
If you meet these conditions, you can install AVG Remote Administration on your server by following these steps:
Note: If there is an older version of AVG Remote Administration installed, its settings and database will be converted to the new version. The older version will be removed/updated during installation.
- Download the latest installation file of your AVG edition from the Downloadssection.
- Choose the AVG Admin 2012 for Windows installation file.
- When prompted, click Save and choose the location where the installation file should be stored
- Locate the downloaded AVG installation file and launch the installation by double clicking the file

- On the OLD server, please open AVG Admin Console and from menu DataCenter select Database export
- Select the folder where the database export will be saved
- Copy the export to the NEW server
- On the NEW server, install AVG 2012 Remote Administration
- Download the latest AVG 2012 Remote Administration installation file by proceeding to the downloads section, selecting your AVG Business Edition and downloading the AVG Admin for Windows file
- In the AVG Admin Server Deployment Wizard, please choose the option to import database, and provide the path to the previously created database backup
- If you wish to use the same AVG Admin Server configuration as on the OLD server (i.e. database connection, update mirroring), then you will not need to configure it manually. Once you go through the basic configuration using the AVG Admin Server Deployment Wizard, please copy the following file:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avg2012\Admin Server Data\avgadmsv.ini
or C:\appdata\Avg2012\Admin Server Data\avgadmsv.ini
from the OLD server to the NEW one

- In the AVG Admin Console, click on Tools > Shared settings for stations
- Select Remote Administration in the hand pane and please fill in the NEW connection string.
Example - http://[NEW_server_name_or_IP]
- In case you are using the AVG Admin Server for update mirroring, please change the URL for updates on both servers as well
- In Shared settings for stations, Expand the Update option in the left hand pane and select URL
- Double-click on AVG Admin Server UpdateProxy and change the URL to http://[NEW_server_name_or_IP]:4158/avgupdate
- In the AVG Admin Console of the OLD server request synchronisation
- Right-click on Stations in the left hand pane and select Synchronise settings
- The stations will now connect to the new server
- If some stations are switched off, they will accept the new connection string on the next startup
- It is recommended to keep the OLD AVG Admin Server running until all stations connect to the NEW server
- Uninstall AVG 2012 Remote Administration from the OLD server
This way, all stations will connect to the new server seamlessly and their configuration will remain the same.

- General information:
The following components are not designed for use on E-mail servers: AVG LinkScanner, AVG Firewall, Personal E-mail Scanner.- AVG Online Shield
- This component is part of AVG Linkscanner and affects all HTTP, HTTPS and PROXY communication, because it scans communication on all respective ports/sockets. This component is not designed or tested for servers and may affect some specific server communication. Its installation is not recommended.
- AVG LinkScanner
- This component affects communication in almost the same way as AVG Online Shield and is not designed for use in a server environment.
- AVG Personal E-mail Scanner
- The Personal E-mail Scanner captures and scans all communication on ports 110 and 25 (POP3 and SMTP) by default. This component is not designed or tested for servers. Its installation may cause issues while processing e-mails on your e-mail server.
- AVG Firewall
- AVG Firewall, like the previously mentioned components, is not designed for server solutions.
- AVG Online Shield

To install AVG E-mail Server Edition on MS Exchange server, it is only necessary to download and run the AVG E-mail Server Edition installation package from our websiteand follow the installation prompts. If MS Exchange is detected during the installation, the appropriate plug in will be installed automatically. Please note that a restart of the Store will be required. - After the installation It is recommended to add the path of the folder where e-mail attachments are saved, in the AVG Resident Shield excludes tab (AVG -> Resident Shield -> Manage exceptions).
If you use AVG Remote Administration, please note that it is necessary to set it up in AVG Admin Console as well.
A list of folders which are recommended to be excluded from AVG scanning on MS Exchange server is available here.
If you require any assistance on this or any other subject, please feel free to contact us.
When installing AVG 2012 on a Terminal Server, it is generally not necessary to proceed differently than on workstations. There is only one component in AVG which will run separately for each user - the AVG Tray application - and its effect on the system performance is minimal even when running in multiple instances. However, in case there are some other server applications running on the Terminal Server, it is recommended to skip installation of the AVG components that could affect their functionality. Below is a list of such components:
AVG Online Shield
This component affects all HTTP, HTTPS and PROXY communication, because it scans communication on all respective ports/sockets. If there is a web server, proxy server or ISA server running on the Terminal Server, please install AVG without the Online Shield component.
AVG LinkScanner
This component affects communication in almost the same way as AVG Online Shield and is not designed for use in a server environment.
AVG Personal E-mail Scanner
The Personal E-mail Scanner captures and scans all communication on ports 110, 143 and 25 (POP3, IMAP and SMTP) by default. If there is a POP3/SMTP E-mail Server installed on the Terminal Server (or any other application communicating on these ports), it is recommended to skip installation of this component.
AVG Firewall
The AVG Firewall is not designed for server solutions, similar to the aforementioned components. Please skip the installation of this component.
To install AVG without these components, you can run the Custom installation and manually choose which components you wish to install, or you may use the following parameters:
- installation without Online Shield
avg_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_HttpScanner - installation without AVG LinkScanner
avg_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_LinkScanner - installation without Personal E-mail Scanner
avg_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_EMC - installation without AVG Firewall
avg_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_Firewall
These parameters can be combined to achieve an installation that suits your Terminal Server use.
If you require any assistance on this or any other subject, please feel free to contact us.
The following AVG components are designed for use only on workstations:
- AVG Firewall
- AVG Personal E-mail Scanner
- AVG LinkScanner
These components have not been tested under a server system load. If installed on a computer used as a server (such as ISA, proxy, mail server, terminal server, etc.) the components may cause issues with server communication. To avoid these issues, it is recommended to not install the mentioned components on server operating systems.
Note: This does not apply in cases where you are using a computer with a server operating system (e.g. Windows Server 2003, 2008, etc.) as a standard computer without the server features enabled.
It is recommended to exclude the following folders from AVG scanning (on the server where AVG for MS Exchange is installed) :

If you are installing AVG and the installation process fails, there are several steps you can take to install AVG successfully.
1. Make sure you are installing AVG under an account with administrative rights.
AVG needs to copy files into folders that are not accessible by accounts without administrative rights. Please make sure that you are logged into Windows with administrative rights.
To make sure that are logged into Windows XP as a user with administrative rights :
- On the taskbar, click Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel .
- Click Switch to classic view in the top left pane, if the option is available.
- Open User Accounts .
All user accounts will be listed on the page. Each account has a status (Computer administrator, Limited account, etc.). Before installing or reinstalling AVG, make sure that you are logged in under an account with Computer administrator status.
If you are not sure which account you are currently logged into, please open the Start menu. The name of the account will be listed either in the title of the Start menu, or next to the Log Off option.
To make sure that you are logged into Windows 7 as a user with administrative rights :
- On the taskbar, click Start -> Control Panel .
- Open User Accounts .
- Click Manage another account .
All user accounts will be listed on the page. Each account has a status (Administrator, Standard user, etc.). Before installing or reinstalling AVG, make sure that you are logged into Windows under an account with Administrator status.
If you are not sure which account you are currently logged into, please open the main User Accounts page. The current user is displayed in the right part of the page.
To make sure that you are logged into Windows Vista as a user with administrative rights please:
- On the taskbar, click Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel .
- In the left pane, click Classic view .
- Open User accounts .

All user accounts will be listed on the page.
2. Always use the latest AVG installation file.
The AVG program is continuously being improved, including the installer, which is responsible for the correct installation process. By using the latest installation package, there is no need to download larger program and virus base updates immediately after installation. To download the latest installation file,
visit the Download section
of our website, select your product, and then click the
AVG for Windows
link.
3. Close all running programs and disable security applications.
Before running the installation file, please close all unnecessary programs and make sure that there is no security application that could interfere with the installation process. Typical examples of programs that may prevent AVG from being successfully installed include anti-spyware utilities and registry monitors/cleaners, which prevent access to the Windows registry. AVG needs to be installed into the registry to provide the functionality and protection it was designed to offer.
4. Remove possible conflicting applications.
If you are using an application which might be in conflict with AVG, please disable or uninstall it completely before running the AVG installation. In general, AVG may conflict with applications that provide the same or similar functionality as an AVG component. This is especially important for other programs with one or more of the following features:
- Real-time protection against viruses (like AVG Resident Shield)
- Monitoring or controlling network traffic (like AVG Firewall)
- Checking or filtering e-mails (like AVG E-mail Scanner)
- Checking websites, web content filters (like AVG Online Shield)
For a list of programs known to be in conflict with one or more components in AVG 2012, please see FAQ 4406 .
5. Disable User Account Control (UAC) (Windows Vista and Windows 7 only).
In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the User Account Control function may in some cases create a copy of specific AVG files in a virtual folder. This limits AVG functionality after installation.
To disable the UAC function in Windows 7:
- On the taskbar, click Start .
- Click Control Panel , and then click User Accounts.
- Click Change User Account Control settings.
- Move the slider down to Never notify , and then click OK.
-
Restart the computer.
To disable the UAC function in Windows Vista:
- On the taskbar, click Start .
- Click Control Panel , and then click User Accounts.
- Click Turn User Account Control on or off , and then clear the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box.
- Click OK , and then restart the computer.
If the troubleshooting above was not successful, please follow these steps to provide AVG Customer Services with the information necessary to resolve your issue.
